Bruening Supports MetroHealth’s Boot Camp for New Dads
Bruening Awards Strong Start Grant to Support MetroHealth’s Boot Camp for New Dads
In May 2018, the Bruening Foundation awarded $8,668 to MetroHealth for the Boot Camp for New Dads, a male-facilitated, father-to-father, community-based workshop that inspires and equips men to become confidently engaged with their infants, support their mates and personally navigate their transformation into dads. Founded in 1990 in California, Boot Camp has been shown to result in increases in dads’ participation in parenting classes and doctor visits; knowledge of infant development, care, child abuse prevention, etc.; supportive behavior regarding the new mom; and involvement in infant care.
MetroHealth has run the Boot Camp for New Dads program since 2007. The program is conducted at all of the county’s birthing hospitals and in the jails. In 2017, MetroHealth expanded the program to several additional community sites: UH Bedford Medical Center, NEON (Hough), Metro’s Broadway clinic (Slavic Village) and Cleveland Clinic’s Stephanie Tubbs Jones Health Center (East Cleveland). Funding from the Bruening Foundation will allow MetroHealth to continue the program at these additional community sites launched in 2017.
